About Interfaith
Housing Alliance

James Upchurch and Bishop Murphy
In 1989, the late Catholic Bishop P. Francis Murphy and Lutheran Bishop
Morris Zumbrun, in conjunction with the Enterprise Foundation, gathered
faith and community leaders of Western Maryland in Williamsport to
address the growing affordable housing demand in the region. Their
concern and action lead to the founding of Interfaith Housing of Western
Maryland in 1990. Today the organization, now named Interfaith
Housing Alliance, Inc., has grown to be the largest not-for-profit
affordable housing developer in the Western Maryland region and has
expanded its mission to serve South Central Pennsylvania. Nearly
1,000 families and senior citizens have benefited from the
organization's affordable housing programs with nearly 300 housing units
in-progress and planned for future development.
